More information about these nice railcars are available in Italian, French and English languages (the English one is a Google automatic translation from Italian: maybe not precise and complete, sorry for this)
Most of these railcars have been dismantled: only the ALn 448 2007 (half a train) is actually shown at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milano
This old railcar, belonging to the group friendly named ‘Littorina’, comes from the FS rack-line Paola - Cosenza
Built in 1939, and operating till 1984, it has been fully restored in 1990 by Metalmeccanica Milanesio
In 1990 it was bought by a rich US gentleman, Mr. Wolfson, to be used for tourist tours at an US Museum
I have no recent news about it
I took all the above pictures when the railcar was shown at Genova Brignole station just before loading it on the ship to the USA
Regular steam-trains ended in Italy about in mid 70’s.
Nowadays, only few steam engines are running for extra and tourist trains.
I just issued a new collection about Italian Steam: enjoy it!
I took the most of my pictures with two old semi-automatic Yashica reflex cameras: a 1986 FX-D quartz and a younger FX-3 Super and using slide film and, even now, I go on using those cameras till when I’ll have enough money to buy a suitable digital reflex camera.
But on yesterday afternoon I was in a railway station, waiting for a train, without my cameras and I tried to take this picture using my mobile: an old Siemens S65 with a 1,3 Megapixel camera ... sure, the quality isn’t the best, but for an emergency can be enough ;)
Here follow some pictures of Italian electric railcars
You can find them even in the Italy collection

The E444 'family' were projected to be the fastest FS engines at that time (end of 60’s)
These engines were frendly named ‘tartaruga’ (turtle) and the above logo was painted over each of them.
They are able to reach a speed of 200km/h
In the ‘80’s the gear ratio was modified on 18 units from the standard 40/77 to 42/75, in order to improve the performance.
At the beginning of 90’s all these engines were subjected to a substantial revamping, consisting of re-designed engineer’s cabs, new electrical and electronic equipment, new gear ratio (42/75) for all the units.
Nowadays, they are still running painted with the current XMPR livery
